freetonik: Google released Google Drive File Stream for Mac, and this is what you get when trying to copy a folder from it.

Great.

Now, why isn't copying file a supported operation? And what do I do about it? Are my files being held hostage?

UPD: turns out this error occurs only when you copy a folder that contains those weird Google Docs/Spreadsheets files that aren't really files, but hyperlinks to the web-files.

So, Google introduced some bizzare non-files, then broke the normal filesystem workflow.

Прости, Гугл, но мне снова ни хрена не понятно.

Вся эта новая штука называется Backup and Sync for Google Photos and Google Drive. Теперь кроме обычного Гугл Драйва есть возможность синхронизировать (и/или забэкапить) любую папку. И фото-архив.

У меня сейчас стоит стандартный клиент Google Drive, и используется для рабочего драйва, который G Suite (бывший Google Apps). Новая версия теперь разделяет личные и рабочие кейсы: клиенты разные, личный доступен сейчас, рабочий выпустят позже. При этом личный называется Backup and Sync, а рабочий Drive File Stream → google.com/drive/download

Дальше еще сложнее: Backup and Sync для файлов и фоток — это два разных приложения. Но на скриншоте выше юзер выбрал для бэкапа документы, десктоп и фото-библиотеку. То есть в Backup and Sync for Google Drive можно забэкапить фотки как любые другие файлы, но они не попадут в Google Photos? А чтобы попали, нужно еще параллельно запустить Backup and Sync for Google Photos? Или не стоит? Я пожалею?

Что будет, если сейчас установить личный клиент? В комментариях на Hacker News нашел, что новый клиент автоматически удалит старый. Но у меня старый был для рабочего драйва, а новый клиент для рабочего не подойдет. Они будут параллельно работать? Я пожалею?

У меня вручную загружено куча фоток в Google Photos. Если я сейчас в новом приложении подключу папку с фотками, они заново все будут загружаться? Продублируются? Перетрутся? Я пожалею?

В обсуждениях на HN, Reddit и других форумах тоже куча вопросов и непонимания.

В итоге я просто боюсь. Я не хочу ничего делать, не хочу рисковать.

nikitonsky: Arghh!.. Nobody should be doing it, yet everybody does. You have perfectly fine product/feature and then you add unnecessary and superfluous functions to it.

Here is Google search as seen on Android 8 phone. Search is fine—it’s rest of the tabs that worry me.

Home? Home of what? My phone already has home screen, and if Google has different home, I certainly am not interested what’s in there.

Upcoming what? Searches? I’m aware Google knows everything but stuff I’m going to search in the future?

Recent searches? Come on, search is always an in-the-moment thing. Who cares for history? If anything, I can always just search again.

And then there is More! It includes Account switcher (Google might need that to spy on you, but I certainly don’t), Recent (yes, again), Saved (somebody saves searches, not results?), Reminders (come on, now Google Search is a todo list all of a sudden?), Customize (Favorite topics? Life’s too short for that), Settings (which is different from Customize) and Help/Feedback (I guess they have to be put somewhere).

Which of those do I care about? My freaking results! Nothing else. I don’t even care about their daily doodle here, my phone _already_ has Google Google Google written all over it.
