Grumpy Website

Getting ready to sleep, trying not to use your phone? HOW ABOUT we send you a notification, lit your screen up and buzz just to say you shouldn’t be checking your phone?

Well of course a shortcut edited on my phone conflicts with the same shortcut edited on the same phone.

It’s funny how twitter users are trying to invent the best way to crop images, while the obvious solution is just not to crop! The only thing you lose by not cropping is confusion.

Why cropping is a terrible idea: grumpy.website/post/0TWSa5aDd

iOS 14 screen navigation. The screen only has four sides, so how many pull-up screens can you put there? A lot!

The best and most reliably working one is Control Centre. It solely occupies the bottom and I couldn’t be happier about it.

On the left from home screen is where widgets live. On the top from the widgets there is app search! To get there you need two pulls, well, it’s not the limit!

On the right now where App Library lives. Looks pretty useless, sorry Apple. But top from there is another app search, different from the one from the widgets! Again, two-step pulling needed to reach it.

The most ingenious iOS invention is that there are two different ways to swipe from the top! One brings app search (same as from widgets) and another brings up lock (notification) screen! This is gold: from there you can go to the widgets screen, and from the widgets screen you can go to the app search! Three-step pulling to reach the screen we’ve already seen twice! You can access camera from there too, if control center or home screen icon are not enough ways to reach it.

To sum up the most crazy parts:

- Two ways to pull from the top, leading to two different screens.

- Two different app searches.

- Old one can be reached in three (!) different places.

- Longest sequence of consecutive pulls: three.

If you know what I mean...

Which days are selected?

Testing iOS 14 Bedtime. Set it to 9am, woke up at 8:30 with no option to disable alarm whatsoever. At 9am alarm rang, despite the screen been on for like 20 minutes already. DnD continued till 10am, because I had it set up before, and Bedtime didn’t override it.

Together a completely schizophrenic behavior with no way to understand what is happening and why. Feels like Apple needs to work on integration more.

Remember when Apple was all for simplicity and elegance? I am afraid those times has passed. An empty tab in new Safari 14.

I think I first saw this error sometime in 1998. Today it's *22 years* after I first saw it, and *33 years* since Excel first launched.

I call this pattern a “menu sandwich”. Time for a redesign.
